Description
A delicious and creamy baked French toast made with thick slices of brioche or challah, perfect for breakfast or brunch.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- A pinch of salt
- Thick slices of brioche or challah
- Unsalted butter (or coconut oil or non-dairy butter substitute)
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 4 large eggs, 1 cup of heavy cream, 1/2 cup of granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt until smooth and well combined.
- Cut your brioche or challah into thick slices, about 1 to 1 inches.
- Place the slices in a shallow dish, then pour the custard mixture over them. Ensure each slice is well coated. Let the bread soak for about 30 minutes, flipping halfway through to ensure even absorption.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a baking dish with butter or your alternative.
- Place the soaked bread slices in the prepared baking dish, overlapping them slightly if necessary. You can sprinkle a little extra sugar on top for the brulee effect.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the custard is set and the top is golden brown. If you like a crispier top, broil for an additional 1-2 minutes at the end, keeping a close eye to prevent burning.
- Let the dish cool for a few minutes before serving. You can serve it with a sprinkle of powdered sugar, fresh berries, or a drizzle of maple syrup.
Notes
- You can substitute heavy cream with half-and-half or coconut cream if desired.
- For a different flavor, use almond extract instead of vanilla extract.
